Dear Parents, 


Whether you are a returning family or new to our community, thank you for considering our learning center for Fall 2023! As we embark on our third term, we continue to see the Lord’s incredible provision at the Influence Learning Center. We are growing!  Next Fall we will have 23 instructors, 4 vendors and 2 directors.  And most importantly, we have a growing community of faithful families who are taking charge of their children(s) education and investing in our program and our community each week.  This is an exciting time at Influence Learning Center. 

In addition to our incredible TK-7th program, the Lord has lined up a team of credentialed and experienced instructors to teach several high-school level core classes.  

This Course Catalog includes course descriptions for each of our individual classes. All classes are offered on an ala carte basis, giving parents the option of selecting those classes that will enhance their home-based program. 

We will soon be providing our families with registration links via our CCB registration. Our CCB registration form is set up by grade level and you will need to complete one form per student.

Algebra 1

Course Description: This High School Algebra I course will cover functions and graphs, integers, rational numbers, exponents, polynomials, factoring, fractions, and more. Homework will be assigned.

Ancient History with Minecraft 

Grades 3rd-6th 

Instructor: Champs Universal 

Course Description: In this class students will learn Ancient histories and cultures through the game of Minecraft. Students will not just learn about ancient Mesopotamia they will become their own early civilization trying to construct irrigation and build Ziggurats just like the Mesopotamians did. From Egypt and the Pyramids to Ancient China and the Great Wall students will take a game they love and use it to become the history and the stories that began the story of us.

Archery

Course Description: Fantasy classes are an intro to archery class using real bows designed for youth. The classes focus on teaching safety and core archery techniques all while keeping energy high and immersive using a fantasy story and plot to reinforce each new skill taught. Students will progress through an exciting original Archery Champs story as well as earn achievements based on behavior and skill using the Archery Champs Phoenix Feather System.

Art: Comic Book Art

Course Description: Welcome to the world of comic books and characters. Join us for this super creative and exciting 16 week class as we peek into the world of comics and story boards, character drawing and scene/background/landscape illustration! Students will learn the art of character development as they set up a story of their own focusing on the ideas of theme, figure and form, character emotions and movements. We will also work with unique material as we learn how to bine, bone fold and create our own books filled with color studies, illustrations, mixed media work and more! You will be amazed at their final outcome: a series of books made 100% by them filled with wonderful creativity to cherish forever!

Art: Fine Art 

Grades 3-8 

Instructor: Creative Creatures & Co 

Course Description: The basics of traditional painting are an essential start for anyone looking to move into illustration, digital painting, and/or fine art. Learn and practice the fundamentals of representational painting from a Laguna College of Art and Design teacher and portrait painter. This class begins with understanding values (shades of black to white) to show volume and light. Then we will move into basic color schemes and color mixing while using watercolor, gouache(an opaque and vibrant medium vs. acrylic), and eventually oil! Class projects will progress from fundamental exercises to painting real objects. Then we will explore the color and light of landscapes and lastly incorporate portraits and figures. Along the way we will draw inspiration from art styles of the past and present to influence our projects. This class is a great start for any student with a love of drawing and the patience to mix colors and handle a paintbrush.

Course Description: The purpose of this class is to disciple and encourage our students to fully know and understand their identity in Christ and to help them discover their unique God-given gifts and talents. We will begin with the biblical principle that we were all fearfully and wonderfully made by our creator God and that God has a special plan and purpose for each of us. Moving forward, we will encourage students to begin to journal, memorizing scripture that speaks to their heart and develop their own Godly Strategic Plans. We will discuss what the Bible has to say about topics such as: stewarding our gifts and talents, gifts of the Holy Spirit, fruit of the spirit, the uselessness of worry, anxiety and fear, and recognizing God’s power in our lives.

Course Description: High School Biology brings God’s creation of cells, ecosystems, biomes, the genetic code, and more to life. In this course, students will observe and recognize the interactions and interdependencies of organisms in their natural environment.  Students will learn to use a light microscope, obtain dissection skills, and be informed of recent advances in modern biology.

Chess Champs

Course Description: In this class, students start by learning the basic pieces and moves as well as base strategies. The class time consists of a lesson on a new component of the game, followed by an opportunity to practice the new skill with a practical assignment. The last half of class, students will be grouped by ability and allowed to free-play chess as the instructors help and engage each student as they need with strategy and assistance.

Beginning Crochet
Grades 3-8
Instructor: Cynthia Leatherman 

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to teach an age-old and almost forgotten skill to a new generation. Crochet is a method of using a tool with a hook similar to a fish hook and a long handle to interlocking individual stitches with yarn, creating textiles such as clothing, accessories, and home goods. The name crochet hook comes from the French word crochet, which means hook. Hooks vary in size and can be used to make different kinds of stitches, and yarns and other types of strands vary in thickness and texture. 

During the first half of the semester, students will complete a sampler showing each of the following stitches as they are learned: chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, triple crochet. Students will also learn the following techniques: gauge, joining together, adding on, weaving in, turning corners, increasing stitches, decreasing stitches, reading a pattern, pattern abbreviations. Students will choose a project to make during the second half of the semester from a selection of patterns provided by the teacher. Students will pick their own yarn and incorporate their own design into their project.

Course Description: This dynamic class will combine nutrition and sports. Coach Merisa Leatherman will start kids off with warm-ups and then lead them in a variety of sports such as basketball, kickball, pickleball, dodge ball etc. Once a month, Coach Merisa will host a class-room style nutrition course. Our students will learn about healthy eating, reading food labels, understanding carbs, proteins and fats and how to properly fuel the body.

Our Kinder Core program utilizes Masterbooks as our primary curriculum. Your student will enjoy learning in a fun, hands-on, developmental environment!

My Story K: My Family, Social Studies for this age typically includes introductions to family and culture, what it is to be a good citizen, basic geography and understanding simple maps, and basic economics and the value of things, ultimately aiming toward a better understanding of God’s love for us, our families, and other people in the world. The course begins at the core with a foundation of family, neighborhood, and church. 

Science: 

Adventures in the World Around Me: Level K

Course Description: The hunt is on for the next LEGO Master! This program is designed to get students inspired to use all their LEGO building knowledge to complete a series of building challenges that will be sure to spark their creativity and inspire them to learn more. We work in small teams, so students work on their communication and collaboration skills.

Course Description: Life Skills Through Collaborative Learning A provides collaborative learning activities for students to learn, practice, and strengthen Christian character and real-life skills. Each week, students will be given hands-on engaging exercises that they will complete in learning teams. The collaborative learning skills build on one another week after week. They will learn how to be independent problem-solvers, critical thinkers, confident speakers, and Christ- like collaborators.

Literature + Composition

Grades 9-10

Brittney Reed

Course Description: This class will focus on teaching students how to read and understand different genres of literature by reading and discussing two books per semester. Each book we read and discuss as a class will focus on one aspect of literature, such as poetry, literary devices, figures of speech, and monomyths. Students will write clear and concise arguments for each essay prompt along with a visual presentation project. 

This class will also take time to teach students sentence structure by reviewing parts of speech, clauses, and phrases; as well as taking time to write journals or free-write to express thought and creativity.

Course Description: This program provides a project-based approach to learning about science. Course Description: Influence Learning Center’s Choir Class is designed for students first grade and up who have an excitement for music and performance. Emphasis will be on developing musicianship and ensemble singing, with a goal of experiencing the joy of public performance. Performance elements include proper vocal production, performance techniques, rehearsal etiquette, and diction, blending, and harmony. Academic elements include music theory and basic ear training. This class is designed to cater to all levels and abilities and will include solo and mandatory performance opportunities.

Course Description: Write from the Beginning…and Beyond is a comprehensive writing program that uses Thinking Maps to build a strong foundation for writing across all genres and content areas. It is FUN! Students will learn to write personal narratives, imagine narratives, and information/expository in a meaningful, creative, and fun way. I choose interesting and/or funny Literature stories to help students learn to enjoy and even love writing. Imagination stories are done in collaborative groups. Students create silly stories using basic writing elements to complete them and act them out! Information/Expository writing explores subjects students are already interested in like favorite animals. Students learn to love writing when they are enjoying it. Almost all work is done in class, unless your child is absent.

INFLUENCE LEARNING CENTER’S CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAM 

Grade Levels: 6th– 12th (with the exception of Acting, which is open for students 8th-12th grade.) The Creative Arts Program (“CAP”) at Influence Learning Center is a pre-professional training program for visual and performing arts. Courses meet weekly for 90 minutes from 3:30-5:00. Course Description: This course is a continuation of the learning process for students who have taken our Intro to Graphic Products and Apparel Course and want to continue to make more complex designs, larger runs of their designs or have an interest in starting a graphic apparel business. In this course, students will learn skills for creating multi-color, multi-layer, and mixed medium apparel. They’ll learn how to use heat transfer vinyl and screen printing to showcase their designs on different kinds of fabrics and learn how to layer different textures and materials to bring their design visions to life. We will go over the creation and ordering process as well as the basics of starting a small business.

Intro to Midi Keyboard Instructor: Chino Gonzalez 

Course Description: MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Students will learn to take their music to the next level with the use of sound effects and modulations; sound design, introduction to recording; and how to navigate in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Students can use a variety of sound hosts including Garage Band, Ableton and Mainstage. Students should have a basic understanding of how to navigate an IPad or Laptop. Acceptable hardware would include a Laptop or IPad.
